And when the rockets thunder You’ll hear your brothers cry And through it all you’ll wonder Just why they had to die So dream on, little broomstick cowboy Dream while you can For soon, you’ll be a dreadful thing My son, you’ll be a man - “Broomstick Cowboy”   I remember when I fell, and I could tell you felt the same You used to say that one fine day you’d wear my name I don’t know what went wrong, I woke and you were gone Now I don’t get along like before Now you’ve left me blue, you’ve found someone new And I can’t call on you anymore - “It Breaks My Heart”
WITH PEN IN HAND The Songwriting of Bobby Goldsboro
The “Broomstick Cowboy” single was released during the Vietnam War, and was banned by several radio stations for being a “protest song.”  Bobby’s explanation that it was not written in protest appears as a spoken introduction to an acoustic version of the song on the 1970 album, “Muddy Mississippi Line.”
